Shared Value is a concept explored in my book, Fundraising Innovators: Leaders in Social Enterprise Share New Approaches to Raising Money. In a recent article in Corporate Responsibility Magazine, Michael Porter, a Harvard Business School professor and founder of FSG, a consulting firm on social impact, provides further optimism on the movement of corporations, especially pharmaceutical and medical device companies, to “do good” and “achieve profitability” by expanding into underserved markets. Porter explains: “In a recent survey 79 percent of nonprofit organizations reported that pharmaceutical and medical device companies are essential partners in the effort to achieve their missions.” Excellent!

What a pleasure to receive a thank you as a volunteer! Today I attended a coffee that acknowledged volunteers who made calls to parents on behalf of the Kent Denver Fund, an annual appeal. This annual fund will close at the end of June, with over $1.2 million and over a 97% participation rate! Participation is at the core of its financial success. Volunteers reach out to parents in a thoughtful way and ask for participation. Of course, in every appeal, its understood that the organization will benefit from a nice size gift. But, what matters even more, in the end, is involving all supporters, regardless of the monetary size of the gift. Reaching all constituents and truly appreciating their participation builds community and a strong core for fundraising. With a focus on building community and relationships with fellow parents, it was fun to make my calls! Congratulations to all the volunteers,to the super-Chair, Kelly Gallagher, and Director of Development, Phil Klein!
